We Celebrate Black History Month

by Catholic Charities – February 23, 2022

“There is no American history without African American history.”

– Sara Clarke Kaplan

Catholic Charities is proud to celebrate Black History Month, a time in which we intentionally reflect on, promote, and celebrate Black heritage and achievement and commit to doing our part to achieve equity and justice every day.

This year’s theme of Black Health and Wellness is an opportunity to pay special attention to the pervasive inequity in health care for Black individuals and families across the U.S. and to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of the Black community to the medical field. From Henrietta Lacks to Charles R. Drew and countless others, Black medical pioneers have made enormous advancements in improving health for all.

Founder of Black History Month, Carter G. Woodson, aimed to “encourage people of all ethnic and social backgrounds to discuss the Black experience.” We enthusiastically follow in Woodson’s footsteps and celebrate Black excellence this month and all year long.

“Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”

― Carter G. Woodson, Founder of Black History Month
