The Bayview and Mission Access Points are programs that aim to address homelessness in San Francisco, serving as a bridge to greater housing stability and hope. When an individual is in need of emergency shelter or housing assistance, an Access Point is often the first place they turn. As part of the Homelessness Response System, the Access Points work in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco’s Coordinated Entry. Together, they aim meet the needs of their clients by addressing their housing challenges and helping them find safe, stable housing. Last year, the Bayview and Mission Access Points responded to over 4,684 people who were seeking housing support, of whom over half were children.
When a client arrives at an Access Point, the first step is often check-in. Clients are welcomed into a safe space as they begin speaking with a staff member.
Our staff listens with compassion to understand the unique needs of each client as they walk through the door. Staff are here to walk alongside clients, letting them know they are not alone in navigating their challenges and finding a place to call home. A staff member then provides assessments to make accurate referrals to additional services and resources. Then, staff will further assist clients with housing solutions. At times, the Access Points are able to distribute hygiene kits and groceries to those who need them. Clients are reminded that no matter what challenges they have faced, there is always hope for tomorrow.
For many who are facing eviction, living in unsafe conditions, or not knowing where they will sleep at night, there can be uncertainty around what kind of help is available. Knowing there is a place and people there to support them can bring a sense of stability in a time of need. Stability is often the first step toward planning for the future. Once connected to housing, clients can focus on their long-term goals, hopes, and dreams.
The Access Points serve as a doorway for individuals and families to connect with immediate support and access to shelter, a basic human right. By responding to immediate housing needs, Access Points help clients build a foundation that may allow them space to find solutions in other aspects of their lives over time.
Housing is an essential component of overall stability, and programs that address this need are doing the important work of serving our neighbors across the city. This work is made possible through ongoing support from our community and our shared commitment to the mission focused on addressing homelessness and housing instability. Where there is hope, there are those who find it in their heart to be a part of the solution, such as our staff and communities who provide immediate support when and where it is needed the most.
