Tom Bowen Named Chief Philanthropy Officer

Catholic Charities of The Archdiocese of San Francisco is pleased to announce that Tom Bowen has joined the agency as Chief Philanthropy Officer.

Catholic Charities of The Archdiocese of San Francisco is pleased to announce that Tom Bowen has joined the agency as Chief Philanthropy Officer.

Tom has long led many philanthropic efforts on behalf of significant public and charitable endeavors at various institutions locally and across the country. Leaders within Catholic Charities expressed delight that he has joined Catholic Charities’ important missions.

“Tom Bowen has a background that is a perfect fit for working with Catholic Charities,” said Dr. Ellen Hammerle, Chief Executive Officer of the San Francisco agency. “As a Seminarian, he understands the depth of Catholic Social Teachings. As a professional, he has extensive experience in the development and philanthropy world, supporting academia, sports, and an array of significant institutions. His achievements have been commendable. We look forward to his advancement of our philanthropy to support the excellent programs and services Catholic Charities provides to change lives and serve the most vulnerable in our community.”

Among his many philanthropic endeavors, Tom was responsible for all regional outreach on behalf of the 49ers Foundation for several years. He developed a comprehensive planned giving program for the University of California, Berkeley, athletic department. In addition, he held adjunct professorships and lecturer posts at the University of Memphis, the University of San Francisco, San Jose State University, and Saint Mary’s College of California.

In 2019, Tom founded and has led Bellwether Athletic Leadership Strategy Co., LLC, a national consulting company for Collegiate Athletic programs, Division I, II, and III.

“Coming from a career in college athletics, I am excited to expand my entrepreneurial spirit while serving in social ministry,” said Chief Philanthropy Officer Tom Bowen. “Catholic Charities appealed to me because of our mission, staff, work, and leadership.”
