On Saturday, July 11, about 30 volunteers gathered at the Catholic Charites Treasure Island Child Development Center to revitalize the garden beds in the outside yard and organize classroom supplies.
The effort was part of One City Day, San Francisco’s citywide day of service, an initiative by First Lady Becca Prowda and Mayor Daniel Lurie to bring neighbors in service across every district of San Francisco.
It was a morning full of steady, hands-on work, the kind that beautifies neighborhood spaces and strengthens community relationships. Volunteers from Catholic Charities San Francisco, One Treasure Island, and the Order of Malta worked side by side to clear weeds, refresh soil, and sort through classroom materials for students ages 0 to 5 that the child development center serves.
TICDC utilizes a “Creative Curriculum” philosophy, which emphasizes play-based learning and provides a conduit for natural curiosity and creativity. Children at the center will grow plants, flowers, and vegetables in the beds volunteers restored, and with the newly organized classrooms allow for a more effective learning environment for teachers and students.
“On behalf of Catholic Charities, we owe a massive thank you to the volunteers who showed up and poured their hearts into One City Day at Treasure Island Child Development Center,” said Bridget Mahoney, Director of Development. “Seeing everyone unite in service across San Francisco, taking time out of their weekend, reveals a grace that is much bigger than ourselves.”
