OUR STORIES

Honoring Humble Service at the 2026 Matthew 25 Luncheon

Across the Archdiocese of San Francisco, parish volunteers give their time to serve neighbors in need, often without recognition. On Sept. 30, Catholic Charities San Francisco honored six of them at its Matthew 25 Awards Luncheon at Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. The luncheon draws its name from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25, celebrating people who follow Christ’s example through volunteerism, good works in the community and service to those most in need.

Zulma Tellez has volunteered at St. Boniface Church for more than 20 years. She helped reopen the parish’s sacraments program, including OCIA and Children’s Religious Education.

Lucy Lee has volunteered at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral since 2005, coordinating liturgy for the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass and serving on the Pastoral Council. She also delivers 300 bags a day with Groceries for Seniors.

Christine and Patty Purdy, twin sisters, serve St. Benedict Parish at St. Francis Xavier Church, a community for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Their weekly Sunday meal after Mass brought the parish back together after the pandemic.

Dan Veto is the director of religious education and faith formation at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Marin County. He also serves as Parish Ambassador at Catholic Charities, connecting parishioners to services and volunteer opportunities.

Marc Bruno, an Emmy Award- winning producer, has been a member of the St. Vincent de Paul conference at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish for 30 years. On Sundays, he hands out sandwiches, socks and hygiene items to people experiencing homelessness in North Beach.
