Peter Claver Community

Providing short-term care to low-income San Francisco residents who have disabling HIV/AIDS

The Peter Claver Community is one of the earliest efforts by any organization to serve those sick and dying from HIV/AIDS - and we're still doing it every day.

Opened in 1985, Catholic Charities Peter Claver Community marked one of the earliest efforts by any organization to aggressively serve those sick and dying from HIV/AIDS. Today, as a comprehensive care residence for 32 previously homeless adults, Peter Claver Community provides short-term care to low-income San Francisco residents who have disabling HIV/AIDS – most of whom struggle with major co-occurring psychiatric disorders and substance use challenges.

To minimize the utilization of hospital emergency rooms, crisis services, and other publicly-funded health systems, the staff is able to address most problems on-site. Collaboration with other HIV providers in the county ensures that residents have all their needs met whether they are medical, psychosocial, vocational, or spiritual.

In addition to offering housing and meals, Peter Claver Community serves as a major component in the HIV continuum of care via medicine management, harm reduction education, counseling, and case management.

Meet Frankie

Frankie is a resident at Peter Claver, our HIV/AIDS community. Individuals with HIV/AIDS are often overlooked by society and typically face difficult health problems which preclude them from working. “I have no family to turn to and had no resources when I got here. I was living on the street and barely surviving. Now I have the care I need and a roof over my head. The folks at Peter Claver truly care and I’m grateful to Catholic Charities for the help.”
