Catholic Charities CYO Nutrition programs teach Bay Area kids how to eat healthy, grow their own food, and learn to cook.

Eating fresh and healthy is a life skill that all kids should learn—of course, the very best produce is grown close to home. Catholic Charities CYO Nutrition programs allow students in low-income urban schools and afterschool programs to grow their own produce using state of the art hydroponic gardens systems. These machines, installed in schools, take up only 9 square feet and produce up to 28 pounds of leafy greens in a 30-day harvest period. The produce is then used for educating students on healthy eating habits, cooking demonstrations by our in-house chef, and lots of opportunities to gather and eat together. Extra produce is bagged and given to families to ensure that no food goes to waste.

Catholic Charities has a Child Development Center on Treasure Island that focuses on play-based experiential learning.

You can’t help but smile upon walking into the Treasure Island Child Development Center (TICDC). Guests are met by colorful and abstract paintings on the wall, rows and rows of picture books, and of course, lots of laughing and happy children at play. Teachers utilize a “Creative Curriculum” philosophy, emphasizing play-based learning, which provides a conduit for natural curiosity and creativity. Students range in age from 3 months old to pre-K, and 95% of our families come from a low-income background. A typical day at TICDC might include lessons in art, music, science, outdoor play and more—all designed to inspire individuality, self-confidence and a life-long enthusiasm for learning.

Carmelita Womens Home women

Carmelita Women’s Home helps formerly incarcerated women heal from trauma, find permanent and stable housing, and reclaim their lives.

Shrouded beneath great redwood trees in San Rafael, this former convent is the perfect environment for peaceful contemplation, a restoration of spirit, and the healing of trauma from one’s past. Carmelita Women’s Home houses up to 10 formerly incarcerated women at once, helping them to reengage with society and transition into the next chapter of their lives. Services include therapy and AA meetings, group activities like hiking and dance class, and access to an in-house food pantry. When women leave Carmelita Women’s Home for a permanent housing solution, they leave fully committed to their sobriety, and to transforming their lives for the better.

Catholic Charities Adult Day Services offers seniors with memory loss a safe place to gather and socialize.

At our Catholic Charities Adult Day Programs, there is always something fun happening. A typical day for our seniors might include anything from chair exercise to watercolor painting, from ring toss to volleyball. Our staff provides a supervised, safe, and friendly environment where seniors and adults with disabilities can interact with friends, increase their independence, and improve the quality of their lives. In addition to providing a broad range of recreational and social activities, our program offers non-medical personal care and an environment of warmth and respect cultivated by our experienced, compassionate staff.
