2023 Letters & Statements

We Take a Stand

May 30, 2023 – Catholic Charities requests addback of funds to ensure our Removal Defense Program for residents in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties remains operational as we attend to 200 open cases due to the severe court backlog of removal defense cases in Immigration Court. We are committed to serving thousands of immigrants in our immigration system of care including those seeking asylum, family reunification, legal status, and representation in removal proceedings, to become fully active participants in the social and civic life of our communities.

May 19, 2023 – The impact of California State Assembly Bills AB 1498 and AB 1128 would allow residents and families living below the poverty line a much-needed Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to help them pay rent, buy food, or access childcare. For every $1 of tax credit these families spend on essential needs, $1.70 is invested in the local economy, helping to strengthen families and build community.

May 17, 2023 – The impact of California State Assembly Bills AB 274 and AB 605, along with complimentary Senate Bills SB 245 and SB 628, would provide the state’s most at-risk residents with much-needed access to affordable food and nutrition to ensure no resident goes hungry during this critical time, including residents served by Catholic Charities in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties.

May 17, 2023 – The impact of California State Senate Bills SB 37 and SB 567 would provide desperately needed housing subsidies and rent stabilization for impoverished families, older adults, and adults with disabilities in San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties, one of the most highly priced rental regions in the country.

Feb 22, 2023 – We support California State Senate Bill SB 4, which offers churches, mosques, synagogues, and nonprofit colleges a simplified process to build 100% affordable housing projects on their excess land available for development, creating a valuable option both for places of worship and for local residents in the midst of the state’s homelessness and housing crisis.
