Catholic Charities welcomes group volunteers both as individuals or in teams.

Current Opportunities:

OMI Senior Center Program Activities Assitant Volunteer: Our Aging Support Service programs function on the belief that seniors are more likely to thrive when they live among friends and family and participate in their own communities.

OMI Senior Center Greeter and Registrar Volunteer: Our Aging Support Service programs function on the belief that seniors are more likely to thrive when they live among friends and family and participate in their own communities.

OMI Senior Center Food Pantry Volunteer:  Catholic Charities’ OMI Senior Center, assists seniors and disabled adults to maintain their independence by providing a program of activities, socialization, a hot meal, assistance, and support in a safe and engaging environment to prevent isolation and institutionalization.

Snack Packs and Toiletry Kits Project: Healthy snack packs and toiletry kits for homeless families. Every day Catholic Charities staff goes out on the streets to help homeless families find housing. To make their lives a bit more bearable, our outreach teams bring food and supplies. We want to make this project easy.  Assemble the kits on your own, or as a group project!

Food Pantry Helpers: Bring your team to help distribute groceries at our weekly food distribution at 10th and Mission Family Housing. 

  • Open to teams up to 15 members
  • Every Thursday from 11:30 am -2:30 pm.

Pro-Bono Legal Services: Experienced immigration attorneys or clerks are needed to assist with asylum and immigration court-related proceedings. 

Parish Ambassador Program

  • Increase public access to Catholic Charities services
  • Meet the needs of the community
  • Unite in faith and common good

Custom Opportunities: (these have a nominal budget to pay for supplies)

  • Restore a Garden at our Star Community Home or San Mateo Adult Day Program.
  • Paint our Leland House Community Room or Mission Center Offices
  • Compete in our Soccer with Heart tournament and help unaccompanied minors.

San Mateo

Children must be 16 or older to volunteer unaccompanied by an adult and have a signed parental permission slip. Children under 16 must volunteer with a parent or a supervising adult (with a signed parental permission slip) and opportunities vary depending on the program.

Senior  Dance Helper: Lend a hand setting up and keeping the party flowing at our regular second Friday senior dance at the OMI Senior Center at 65 Beverly Street. Dancing not required, having fun mandatory.

Luncheon Server: Every month we gather seniors and disabled folks to share lunch and fellowship. Helpers needed to serve, socialize and tidy up at the Handicapables.  11:00 am – 2:00 pm second Saturday of the month at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Gough and Ellis. Commitment can be one-time or on-going.

Making Kits for the Homeless: Pack survival kits for the homeless. We will be stuffing backpacks with snacks, t-shirts, and toiletries for families and individuals who are homeless. All materials are included.   Must fill out a registration form to participate. 

Serving Kits to the Homeless: Come help prepare and serve the homeless at the Interfaith Winter Shelter on February 4th from 5 PM – 8 PM at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1111 O’Farrell.  Catholic Charities will be supplying the dinner for one night of this annual shelter event that opens up churches of all denominations for the cold, winter months to provide food and shelter. Volunteers will help transport, prepare, serve and clean up the dinner.  Must fill out a registration form to participate.

Schools are encouraged to hold donation drives to benefit the children, families, and seniors we serve. We provide support for these drives, in the form of donation bins, posters, recognition of the school’s contributions and speaking to schools and students about our programs.
