Black History Month Staff Reflection: Stan Stone

Stan Stone, Activity and Volunteer Coordinator at Catholic Charities Peter Claver Community is a poet. In honor of Black History Month, he shares a moving tribute to his 90-year old father, John Stone, at left at age 22.

I Am the Son of a Black Man

I am the son of Black man

Who was raised in the south

And told me dark stories of

Lynching and segregation

I am the son of a Black man

Who taught me to judge a man

By the content of his character

And not the color of his skin

I am the son of a Black man

Who loved my mother

And told her so.

Often.

I am the son of a Black man

Who modeled for me the benefits

Of being a diligent worker

I am the son of a Black man who

Raised me to be polite

But not a pushover

I am the son of a Black man

Who urges me to be strong

In the face of adversity

I am the son of a Black man

Whose smile lights up a room

And warms my heart

I am the son of a Black man

Who lovingly embraced me

When I confessed to

Loving another man

And when this Black man

Leaves this mortal earth

I will suffer a wound so deep

It cannot be healed

But I will derive comfort

In knowing that this man

Lives on in me

And I will shout to the world

I AM THE SON OF A BLACK MAN
