The recent announcement of the Trump administration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has sent shock waves through our immigrant community and community as a whole, leaving many of our members in a vulnerable situation.
Catholic Charities shares the sentiments of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in opposing the Trump Administration’s decision to terminate the DACA immigration policy. DACA has been in place since 2012, protecting 780,000 youth as they work and provide for their families; serve in the military; and continue to receive an education. These young people were brought to America as children and America is their home. We see this action as a disregard for the well-being of families and children, sowing division rather than mercy and goodwill.
Catholic Charities is currently urging all DACA recipients to seek qualified, legal advice before taking any action during this time of deep uncertainty. In this spirit, Catholic Charities will be one of the participating organizations in support of free DACA Renewal Workshops in San Francisco. A collaborative of City, community, and local organizations have made this event possible. This event will offer free DACA renewal application assistance, free general attorney consultations for DACA recipients as well as fee assistance and resources to pay application fee. The Workshop will take place on Saturday, September 23 at Mission High School starting at 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Additionally, DACA renewal immigration fees may be waived for some Mexican nationals due to limited funds procured by the Mexican consulate. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to RSVP in advance, which can be done online here at bit.ly/sfdacarenewals
