Derek Silva Community

We serve chronically ill people with dignity.

People living with disabling HIV/AIDS can turn to Derek Silva Community for low-cost, long-term housing and support services.

People living with disabling HIV/AIDS can turn to Derek Silva Community for low-cost, long-term housing and support services. The program provides the security of permanent subsidized housing to its residents, allowing them to focus on their medical treatments, relevant mental health issues, and/or substance abuse issues without the threat of homelessness. The program assists all residents to live with dignity and to maintain a maximum level of self-sufficiency.

Our staff members also provide on-site counseling, referral advocacy, and direct assistance. Residents may also receive crisis intervention and emotional support services.

The program was named for Derek Silva, who died of AIDS in 1994. Through the program, Derek’s family has generously supported HIV/AIDS housing in San Francisco.

What We Do

What We Do

Serving the most vulnerable in our community

“It has been a privilege serving our clients at Derek Silva Community for these many years. I have learned much from them and wish to continue to assist in all facets of their lives as they make the Community their home.”

“I have lived at Derek Silva for a long time and am a compulsive hoarder. I like my apartment and like that it is full of good things but I recognize that it is too full and that it is causing me serious trouble. But I could not stop my hoarding. The case managers helped me to try to get on top of my compulsion and did so without judging me or pushing me, and introducing me to programs that help with hoarding, which allowed me time to understand my compulsion and begin to manage it. “
